Continuing Addiction Treatment at a Sober Living Facility

A sober living facility or halfway house is often the last and most important treatment step for those who are afflicted with a drug or alcohol addiction. Residents of these facilities have one important goal in common. That goal is to begin a new and productive life of sobriety. These halfway houses give recovering addicts the opportunity to re-enter society at their own pace with the knowledge and advice that they learned during in-patient therapy sessions. Living with others who are fighting the same urges and cravings gives much needed additional recovery support for residents who are in the same, if not similar situations. This final step gives individuals who have completed a residential drug addiction treatment program the chance to secure their goals without the outside influences and triggers that can often be the cause of a relapse upon returning home.

Sober living houses do not provide medical forms of treatment or recovery plans. They provide an orderly atmosphere that is free of drugs and alcohol so that the chances of maintaining a drug free lifestyle are greatly increased. Counseling groups organized by the residents, and the opportunity for daily discussions among those who have chosen to leave an unhealthy lifestyle behind to begin leading a new life of sobriety, are encouraging means of therapy for all of those residing in the household. These meetings and discussions are organized only by the residents living there and are not supervised by a medical staff. The responsibility of achieving a lifetime of sobriety and productivity shifts to the recovering addicts as they are encouraged to provide support to one another through this very difficult time. Either together as a group or on an individual basis the objective is to pursue enjoyable activities that do not include the use of drugs or alcohol.

Residents will find that the use of drugs, alcohol, or violence will not be tolerated when residing in a sober living house. Daily chores will be assigned to help promote responsibility and to show the importance of maintaining the upkeep of any household. They will also learn to become self sufficient and must maintain employment to pay for their room and board and to purchase their own food supplies and other staples. Residents will also have the option of attending a vocational school or accredited college to further their education. This is in addition to attending the required number of weekly 12-step meetings as well as sharing living quarters with at least one other recovering addict.

The purpose of a halfway house is to provide a safe and structured atmosphere where recovering addicts can continue their recovery methods without the stress of returning to the same environment which encourages their use of chemical substances. This opportunity gives both men and women the chance to begin living a productive life and to become a functioning member of the community. The gradual reintegration back into society has been proven to provide higher success rates for those who are attempting to accomplish and uphold sobriety when compared to those who return to society once released from an in-patient rehabilitation program. Careful consideration should be taken into account when considering a sober living facility as an addition and continuation to an in-patient addiction treatment plan. Go to Sober Living Support.
